Church School is an important part of your children's Christian education. Just as they are sent off to school on weekdays, they should be brought to Church School on Sundays.
Pre-School (3 & 4 year old)
In our Archdiocese, Christian Education begins when they are Pre-Schoolers - no child is ever too young to learn. If the child will take part in the class he or she is welcome to join. There are two books that are used in the Pre-School class:
THE WONDER OF IT ALL (3 year old), which introduces the child to church settings and objects. They learn that angels are God's helpers and guard over them. The children are encouraged to see the church as God's family; experience sharing and sense the wonder of God's work.
GOD. MY FRIENDS AND ME (4 year old). The children are introduced to icons, Saints, House Blessings, presentations of the Theotokos. They learn how to make the sign of the cross and The Lord's Prayer.
Kindergarten
TOGETHER WITH GOD is the book used in class. The curriculum is designed to introduce students to the liturgical life of the church beginning with the concept that the Church is God's Family. The children are introduced to elementary concepts of God, the Holy Trinity, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, God's people, and their activity in the church. They learn the Gospel is God's Word. Learn about baptism and Holy Communion. The children should see God as a loving Father and pray to Him; treat others in a kind and helpful way; become aware that priests, teachers, and parents are helpers of God.
First Grade
GOD LOVES US Is the book used in class. The curriculum aims to lead children to experience God as our loving, caring, and forgiving Father. They learn about St. Nicholas; Icons; Feasts of Annunciation, Nativity and Epiphany. This curriculum is designed to further the understanding of cooperation and sharing; forgive others as God forgives us; see themselves and others as unique and valuable.
Second Grade
The children are introduced to the Sacraments of Baptism, Chrismation, and Eucharist. The Lord's prayer is reviewed. The Creed is introduced. The Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession is introduced. This curriculum aims at helping children see themselves and others as members of God's family, the church. The children should learn to forgive others as God forgives us; learn forgiveness as a spiritual virtue.
Third Grade
NEW LIFE IN THE CHURCH is the book used in class. The children are introduced to Early Christians and Worship; Orthodoxy Sunday; Nativity Fast; Great lent; Holy Week and icons. This curriculum develops the child's awareness that the New life received from Christ (through Sacraments) is shared with others within the community of the Church. The children are helped to see that the church is a community of believers who are called by God to pray, worship, serve and minister to others, to be forgiving, to share the Good News, and teach the message of Jesus Christ, as Christians to make moral choices.
Fourth Grade
JESUS. THE PROMISE OF GOD is the book used in class. The curriculum studies the aspect of Church History and Tradition in the context of the gospel stories. Children are introduced to a map study of the Holy land; Church symbolism during Pasha and Holy Week. Other basic teachings introduced are God's gift of free will to all; The Fallen Angel - Lies and Temptations; the Four Evangelists and Feasts of the Lord. The children learn about making choices, facing temptations, responsibility for their actions; concern for others who need help; Beatitudes as rules to happiness.
